Acid Reflux Treatments

Acid reflux  may be treated in two ways. One is the right medication, and the other is just change of lifestyle and eating habits. No matter what you used for acid reflux treatment,  it is strongly recommended to consult a doctor.

The reason is the fact that drugs for  medicines used to treat  other diseases can repress medicine use for acid reflux treatments.

Acid reflux treatment can be divided into three broad categories:

- Changes in  lifestyle

- Medication

- Surgery or laparoscopic surgery

 

Changes in lifestyle

This treatment  advises  the patient to change their lifestyle,  from eating habits to sleeping habits and even body posture while exercising. When we talk about eating habits, patients cannot  take spicy food, coffee, alcohol anymore.

It is also suggested to reduce the consumption of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. It is also advised to have  a smaller meal, but more than 3 times.

Avoid a meal just before bedtime. This will reduce the expansion of the stomach during digestion. Chewing gum after a meal will increase the production of saliva, which in turn neutralize the acid in the esophagus, and in return, to give relief to produce acid increases.

Patients should follow these guidelines.

- quit smoking.

- Cut down caffeine intake.

- Bring down stress

- maintain ideal body weight.

- Avoid wearingwaist fitted  clothes

- Do not exercise after a meal.

Patients should try to keep their bodies in straight and comfortable posture. Do not sleep without a pillow. Keep your upper body  elevated will not let the liquid come into the esophagus.

 

Medication

Specific medications are  designed to be used in acid reflux treatments. Some drugs lower acid production by turning off the cell surface molecules (proton pump inhibitor) in the gastric mucosa. Proton pump work  with the positively charged hydrogen ions and increase acid production.

Proton Mild cases are treated with antacids. Aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate are common antacids used as acid reflux treatments.

Alginic acid is the active ingredient of the foam barrier tablets. Alginic acid tablets to protect the stomach and lower esophageal mucosal lining. It is recommended to chew properly after 30 to 60 minutes with a meal or before bedtime.

Antihistamines are also used to acid reflux treatments. Antihistamine provides fast relief of primary heartburn and infection of the esophagus.
Surgery or Laparoscopic Surgery

Severe acid  reflux  treatment can be  by surgery. Operations are used to support the lower esophagus. This will stop acidifying food into the esophagus. Surgical procedures are used to accomplish this  is called a fundoplication. The surgical of acid reflux treatment is very complicated.

Extensive analysis before is  conducted to determine the status of the patient.  Surgery is an invasive procedure should be done very carefully. However, laparoscopic surgery is a less invasive method. This method can be small holes above the navel and abdomen. The patients have a speedy recovery. Laparoscopic surgery is performed by qualified and experienced surgeons.
